Award #5 for “GUTSY: How Women Leaders Make Change”

Sylvia Lafair, PhD wins another book award for GUTSY; How Women Leaders Make Change.

Oct. 30, 2013 – WHITE HAVEN, Pa. — Press Release: Award #5 for “GUTSY: How Women Leaders Make Change”

White haven Pa. October 31 2013 — “Whoo Hoo” was Sylvia Lafair’s response when told her book “GUTSY” (Infinity Press 2012) has won yet another award, this time from the Mid-West Book Festival.

“I love to write and I love to be acknowledged for making a difference,” she said when advised she was the first place winner in the “How To” section of the competition.

Her initial book, “Don’t Bring It to Work” (Jossey Bass 2009) is now considered a classic in the leadership genre that offers leaders a route to understand and even better, transform old, ingrained behaviors that often show up at work. It has won nine book awards and GUTSY is catching up with five.

“GUTSY” takes women on a journey to see what pushes their buttons and more importantly, what to do about it. While “GUTSY” was originally written for women in the workplace she has received e-mails and phone calls from men who say “Thank You!”

Men are not only giving the book as a gift to wives, partners, direct reports, and co-workers. Often daughters in college are getting the book sent to their dorms.

As Dr. Lafair explains “I wrote this book to appeal to young women starting their careers as well as seasoned professionals who have lots of people on their teams. It is for busy people who can read short chapters and get to the point in a fast, fun way.”

“GUTSY” and its companion “GUTSY Success Guide Book” outlines her important OUT Technique that gives a road-map to getting along with even the most gruesome (after all it is Halloween) co-workers. Those who have read the book and do the exercises in the Success Guide are virtually guaranteed to have work relationships enhanced.

When asked about her experience with the books Yvonne Cangalosi, President of Spex Certiprep said “The most amazing part of reading the books and doing the exercises is that my relationships at home became even better, so it was a double win.”

Elaine Sterling President of the Elaine Sterling Institute” in Atlanta who had been to a GUTSY WOMEN WEEKEND based on the book said, “Initially I was not sure that what I learned in my original organization, the family was really all that important in my company. However, GUTSY, the book, the success guide, and the weekend all showed me new innovative ways of constantly improving my team as well as my family relationships. This work is life changing.”

Dr Lafair has been a business consultant and leadership expert for 30 years and has watched the rise of women to places of power. She has many tips and techniques for helping women become GUTSY, or if already GUTSY, get even more so.

“Once you are GUTSY” she says with a huge smile, “people will follow you because they won’t want to look away, they won’t be able to look away, they will want what you have and that is what GUTSY is all about.”

Lafair’s book has won numerous awards including First Place in the Paris Book Festival and Best Business Book to Read at the Beach.

Lafair, recently seen on the TODAY Show with Kathie Lee and Hoda has vital information for today’s women to become powerful leaders, both in the work world, as well as in personal relationships.

Her unique perspective is that we bring behavior patterns from our original organization, the family, into our present business setting. Her tools and techniques are creating waves in organizations that are forward thinking and are destined to be on the great places to work list.

“Our team has learned about patterns and it has had amazing positive results” — Laurie Wade, Educator, Hershey Pa.

Passionate about her research, Lafair says “Stress is the modern day killer. What I have discovered is that when stress hits the hot button we all tend to revert to patterns we learned as kids for protection and survival. While they may have helped us when we were three or seven they backfire when we are in our gorgeous stilettos.”

She offers her OUT Technique™ (OBSERVE, UNDERSTAND, TRANSFORM) which gives a roadmap for learning what pushes our buttons and what to do to handle the stress and frustration of annoying situations.

“I was thrilled to have the opportunity for “GUTSY” to be given out at the Emmy’s.” Lafair commented.

“In fact, everyone in attendance at the awards ceremony will get a copy of the e-book and my hope is that it will spark interest for the guys to read, too. Interestingly, I have received emails from men thanking me for helping them understand the females in their lives better.”

Women who work in vast and varied organizations have given “GUTSY” thumbs up. “While the OUT Technique requires some strength training, it makes all conflict situations faster to resolve in a more lasting way.” —- Brenda Thompson, H.R. Expert, Wilmington, DE.

GUTSY-on-the-GO: Women’s Workshop with Award-winning Author, Dr. Sylvia Lafair

White Haven, PA, April 12, 2013–Award-winning author, leadership and communications
expert, Dr. Sylvia Lafair, is bringing ideas from her latest book, “GUTSY: How Women Leaders Make Change, to a national seminar series promoting effective communication strategies for women at work.

Sylvia Lafair will be traveling to Atlanta, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Napa Valley over the next few months.

Dr. Lafair’s recent research explores the messages women receive growing up about how to communicate, negotiate, and interact, and how those messages play out in careers.

“While for some women it’s easy to speak out, take risks, and lead change, others need a nudge to exude confidence. My techniques enable women to communicate more effectively in meetings, use specific power words to get points across, and offer shortcuts to working faster and smarter. The workshops are interactive and highly entertaining, too,” says Lafair.

As a consultant, Lafair has spent time in business settings showing teams how to take the best of the male capacity to be “daring” and the female strength of “caring” and blend them into a new mixture required for 21st Century leaders, simply called “sharing.”

Dr. Lafair says, “It’s no surprise men and women communicate differently, fight differently, negotiate differently, do business differently—it’s not right or wrong and one way isn’t better than the other. One key to success for women is to understand how to utilize their vital GUTSY side for effective workplace relationships.”

Lafair’s consulting firm, Creative Energy Options, Inc. (CEO)with offices in PA and CA is known for pioneering work in leadership development. While CEO has been recognized two years in a row by Leadership Excellence for success with its program, Total Leadership Connections, Lafair’s first book, “Don’t Bring It to Work,” (Jossey Bass, 2009) has won eight literary awards.

Total Leadership Connections Program Celebrates a Decade of Success

WHITE HAVEN, Pa., May 31, 2012 — Creative Energy Options, INC. announces new data showing how their highly respected leadership program helps leaders succeed over years.

It’s not just another flavor of the month,” said Denise Fantuzzi, President of DF Consulting.

In its second decade, with the 52nd class convening July 18-20 (http://www.ceoptions.com), the numbers are strong. Partnering with the statistics department at East Stroudsburg University, they researched how the innovative concepts and tools of the Total Leadership Connections program help leaders develop.

The results are in.

Candidates are initially given a 360 Degree Leadership Assessment developed by CEO INC., another six months after they graduate, and finally three years later. While in any type of learning situation there are diminishing returns, here the key ideas are retained, and get stronger.

The success and longevity of this program is because it goes well beyond traditional programs. It targets the underlying stressors at work and how this stress impacts business relationships. More importantly, it gives practical and sound advice on what to do about it.

Over 30 years of research by CEO INC., President Sylvia Lafair, PhD shows that the patterns of behavior we learned in our original organization, the family, are the ones we bring with us into our work organizations and are activated from stress. However, once we can target these patterns we can learn simple and effective methods to transform them.

The 360 Degree Assessment has been proven to be valid and reliable and 79% of those going through the program demonstrated a major increase in the 30 core competencies measured. They are more resilient, more able to resolve conflict, more collaborative and able to lead teams through tough times with less absenteeism and gossip.

This assessment can be used on its own for companies interested in testing the strength of leaders and identifying area for improvement.

To get a deeper understanding of this powerful and prestigious program, read Dr. Lafair’s award-winning book “Don’t Bring It to Work” (http://www.sylvialafair.com), named one of the top 20 books for new leaders. The company has been selected as one of the top leadership development organizations of 2011 by Leadership Excellence.

Leadership Expert and Author Sylvia Lafair Wins 8th Book Award from Paris Book Festival

WHITE HAVEN, Pa., May 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Just ask Dr. Sylvia Lafair about why we spend billions of dollars to solve stress and conflict-related issues at work and you will hear an earful.

“We have been looking in all the wrong places,” Lafair states. Based on research in her book that continues to rack up awards, she helps us see the shocking similarity between how we behaved in our original organization, the family, and how we bring the patterns we learned as children right into our present organization, the workplace.

“Don’t Bring It to Work” (ISBN: 978-0-470-40436-2: Jossey Bass) explores why we react the way we do in our business endeavors and is nothing short of revolutionary. It recently won the first-place non-fiction award at the Paris Book Festival.

“Think about it this way,” Sylvia says with passion. “We learned about favoritism, back-biting, and compassion as little kids, and,” she pauses to make sure everyone is with her, “these are the same issues we deal with on a day-to-day basis at work.”

In her seminars, Lafair’s instantly engaging manner and skill as a storyteller puts everyone on the edge of their seats as they quickly learn to connect the dots from home to work.

“I’ve studied habits of those who derail success and those who can make positive change happen. Working with business teams I discovered the main ingredients that make teams win at work that I love to share.”

Dr. Lafair’s methods continue to create a buzz. “As we teach in our Total Leadership Connections Program (http://www.ceoptions.com), Observing, Understanding, and Transforming patterns move them OUT of your life forever.”

“Sylvia is a motivating speaker who shares a foolproof system that helps you achieve success not just at work – everywhere. It isn’t difficult or obscure; it makes all the sense in the world,” says Brenda Thompson, HR Director at Landis-Rath, who recently participated in one of Dr. Lafair’s seminars.

Author Scores with GUTSY Women Retreat

White Haven, Pa. February 9, 2012 —Women leaders in business know the dilemma too many demands on home front, as well as at work: how to juggle so everyone is happy and nothing crashes and burns?

Sylvia Lafair, PhD, author of award winning book “Don’t Bring It to Work”, knows the problem well.

With all the advances women have made in the business world, the demand to still be point person at home has not changed over the decades. In my executive coaching I still hear the complaint that there is never enough time for self-care” says Sylvia.

This response wasn’t good enough for Lafair, President of Creative Energy Options Inc., an award-winning leadership development company. She began to research the issues surrounding the fact that while much change has occurred for women in business, some patterns of behavior are still behind the curve.

Armed with data and determination, she developed the GUTSY WOMEN WEEKEND RETREAT to combine learning and leisure. Lafair has created what amounts to a women’s self-defense program, offering advice and information to help women get in touch with what they need to do to, in her words, “have self-care, be self-aware, and even more important, become pattern-aware of what women keep repeating from their past”.

The retreat begins on a Friday evening with a wine reception and sumptuous dinner and ends with brunch on Sunday morning, giving women in business the tips and tools to find a better work-life balance. The weekend combines education and entertainment along with opportunities for networking. There is time for massage, yoga, hiking or just relaxing, as well as a team building event to understand the power of collaboration.

One key aspect that sets this retreat apart is weaving new research about how men and women relate, addressing the complexities of contemporary life, at home and work.

Dr. Lafair, who morphed from a family therapist to a business leadership expert, is also a wife, mother, and grandmother. She has always been on the leading edge of change and her important ideas about how patterns of behavior are repeated from generation to generation until “we take that bull by the horns and dare to do it differently” have made her a sought after speaker.

Here is what women who have gone through previous GUTSY Women weekends have this to say:

GUTSY hits the spot. It’s what every business woman, actually what every woman needs now. In one weekend I was able to rethink, reclaim, and reinvent my priorities for work and home; in just ONE weekend! – Joanne LaMarca, Network TV Producer, New York

It was an incredible weekend. I got clarification about my next steps and was supported by an amazing group of women I had never met before. I learned about how my behavior patterns could be changed for the better. Take the leap and become GUTSY! – Liz Moore, Living by Nutrition, Sewell, NJ

The next GUTSY WEEKEND is April 13-15, 2012 at Dr. Lafair’s retreat center, www.retreatpa.com, and those who attend will receive a copy of her new book “GUTSY: How Women Leaders Make Change” to be launched in March. Lafair, who started her career as a family therapist saw the shocking similarity between how we behave in our original organization, the family and how we bring the patterns we learned as children right into the workplace. These days she reveals the results of her more than 30 years of research to employers and employees at her speaking events.

Her instantly engaging manner and skill as a storyteller puts everyone on the edge of their seats as they quickly see how to target and transform ingrained behavior patterns that block productivity and success. Her simple and powerful OUT Technique™ gives a road map to getting along rather than getting mad or getting even with annoying co-workers.

“Over the last three decades I have spent time figuring out why it is so hard to get along in day to day relationships. I’ve studied the habits of those who derail success and those who have the ability to make positive change happen. I discovered a main ingredient that makes the difference. When you learn how to connect the dots between how you responded to upsets as a kid and how these patterns show up in present work situations, you are then the master of your reactions.”

Dr. Lafair’s methods to TARGET and TRANSFORM workplace patterns continue to create a buzz. Her book, already winner of three business book awards has now been honored as one of the top 20 for emerging leaders and her Total Leadership Connections Program will begin its 50th anniversary session in March (http://www.ceoptions.com) and her leadership programs and consulting won a place in the top leadership organizations from the prestigious Leadership Excellence Institute.

Do It Differently in 2012 –Company President Reveals New Version of GUTSY WOMEN WEEKEND RETREAT

December 19, 2011 – White Haven, PA

There is a huge demand for women’s leadership programs that go beyond motivational seminars to the heart of how women can be change agents in today’s competitive work setting.

The GUTSY WOMEN WEEKEND RETREAT offers answers to start the New Year with new perspectives. It will roll out in 8 U.S. cities in 2012, including San Diego, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Manhattan hosted by women leaders and facilitated by Sylvia Lafair PhD, President of Creative Energy Options (CEOinc).

The primary focus of the program encourages women in business to TARGET and TRANSFORM ingrained workplace behavior patterns to increase success.

Stress, time constraints, and the constant struggle for work-life balance often leave women overwhelmed and frustrated. Recognizing these challenges for female managers, entrepreneurs, and solopreneurs, Dr. Lafair began to study the different ways women leaders respond and communicate.

“You should invest in this program because it will give you new insights” said Jennifer Gottschling, from Boston. “I did and it helped me observe my pattern of being a pleaser, one that I was quickly able to transform to be a truth-teller. When I returned to the office, there was a major difference in how I put some boundaries around my workload and surprisingly found everyone on my team began to work together differently. It was more than I ever thought possible.”

GUTSY women learn that self-care is NOT selfish-care; being self-aware is a must; and being pattern-aware is the NEWEST and EDGIEST way to become “conflict competent” in relationships both at work and at home.

Sylvia Lafair PhD, award winning author, business leadership expert, and executive coach  created this inspiring program based on her newest book “GUTSY: How Women Leaders Make Change” to be released January, 2012. The Friday evening through Sunday noon retreat has now been requested around the country. The next event will be held at The Country Place Retreat and Conference Center, in Pennsylvania, February 3 – 5, 2012.

“I believe this is a major breakthrough era for women leaders and I am dedicating most of my time to offer the powerful tools and tips I have gathered together for all working women.”  With her usual GUTSY GUSTO she added, “The knowledge is here to observe, understand, and transform behaviors that till now have kept us locked in wasteful conflict and various versions of “the gotcha game”. The time for all women to be heard more effectively is NOW.”

Attendees at the highly successful event describe the week-end as “amazing, empowering, and energizing”. Each attendee leaves with a GUTSY Action Plan for making a difference in their own lives and paying it forward to others.

“GUTSY hits the spot. It’s what every business woman, actually every woman needs now. In one weekend I was able to rethink, reclaim, and reinvent my priorities for work and home. In just ONE weekend! Get your gear together and get to GUTSY. You will thank Sylvia and her team forever and ever”. Joanne LaMarca, TV Producer, New York

With her years of executive coaching and research Dr. Lafair puts things in perspective “That old battle of the sexes still lives. It is great that we know it really is all in our heads! Yet, learning how to communicate based on our brain differences turn that battle into a powerful partnership.”

For over 30 years her dedication to optimize workplace relationships is evident in this fun and fact filled program that gives women the tools and tips to find the perfect balance between giving and getting without selling themselves out. “This is a time for all women to trust that keen intuition, that gut feeling which is so often right and help lead the way to a more vital and people friendly work environment.”

This program offers a week-end packed with healthy food, great conversations, and eye-opening ideas, along with time to reenergize, recalibrate, and refuel.  Friday evening through Sunday noon addresses three core aspects of a working women’s life: how to become your best in self-care, self-aware and pattern-aware areas of your life.

Lafair states “GUTSY women learn that self-care is not selfish-care. Patterns often inherited from past generations will not suffice in the contemporary world. We all need to design our own balance sheet for what makes us effective in the long run”.  This program helps to retrain the brain for happy, healthy, and hearty living.

Self-care will include the opportunity for massage, hiking, yoga, nutritional information, and exercise.

Self-aware modules will include some easy to follow techniques for taking an “inner snap shot” to make life enhancing decisions.

Pattern-aware lectures will help highlight new knowledge about relationships; why patterns repeat and what to do about them.

Always a GUTSY woman, Dr. Lafair did plunge into new territory first as an innovative family therapist and then as a business leadership expert. Her new book, “GUTSY: How Women Leaders Make Change” to be published in August 2011 includes the long view of the way women have changed the patterns of history, or as she calls it “herstory” and ways to be both feminine and tough, in a word GUTSY.

As she is so often quoted “Take the road less traveled; there’s no traffic to hold you back”.

Here’s the formula: take a group of women from diverse backgrounds, combine with a beautiful, serene setting, a dynamic program on what it means to be powerful and gutsy, plus great food, time to become self-aware and pattern aware, and add in some time to relax and have some self-care, and you’ve got GUTSY Success.

Attendees at the highly successful May event described the weekend as, “amazing, empowering, inspiring, and motivating”, and did not want to see it end. One attendee stated she returned home and sat with her daughter for two hours sharing what she learned. She told her how important it was to get quiet and take care of herself, especially when stressed with relationships and work.  She dialogued with her daughter using questions she had been asked at the retreat. They discussed family, relationships and work, and after a lot of tears and hugs her daughter was on her way home and this attendee had already paid it forward to someone else.  Each attendee left with a GUTSY Action Plan for making a difference in their own lives and paying it forward to others.

The next GUTSY Women Week-End Retreat is scheduled for August 5-7 at The Country Place Retreat and Conference Center. For a brochure and registration materials, please call 570-636-3858 or email Shirley@ceoptions.com or visit http://www.ceoptions.com/?page_id=55 .

GUTSY Women Leaders Make Change

White Haven, PA – May 23, 2011
In honor of Women’s Health Month and International Women’s Day, Sylvia Lafair PhD, is doing a double launch of her newest book “GUTSY! How Women Leaders Make Change” and her “GUTSY Women Week-End Retreat” May 20-22.  The new event will be held at her corporate training facility, The Country Place in Northeastern Pa.  Women, at the forefront of business, are making positive changes happen every day in every way by redefining leadership, and Dr. Lafair is here to give the short cuts to amazing success.

Sylvia Lafair has done it again! Her new GUTSY women’s leadership program, retreat style, gives working women what they need: time to reenergize, recalibrate, and refuel. The Friday evening through Sunday noon program addresses three core, areas, “how to be the best” in self-care, self-aware, and pattern-aware.

“In my research I really understand how vital it is for women to find the balance between what to give and what to get, and the essence to all of this is a new view of workplace relationships”, states Lafair.

GUTSY women learn that self-care is not selfish-care. Time is put aside to get quiet and get relaxed.

GUTSY women learn to be self- aware, when to plunge forward or stop. Time is spent with easy to follow tips on how to trust your gut and retrain your brain.

GUTSY women learn that pattern-aware means knowing everything you can about relationships, why patterns repeat and what to do about them.

The GUTSY Week-end Retreats are based on her 35 years of being a leader, often at a time when women were still standing behind men. She did plunge into new territory in healthcare, education, and business, learning how to partner in an equal way rather than seeing men as adversaries. Her new book “GUTSY! How Women Leaders Make Change” includes the long view of the way women have changed the patterns of history, or as she calls it “herstory”  and practical ways to be both feminine and tough, in a word, GUTSY.

As she is often quoted, “Take the road less traveled; there’s no traffic to hold you back”.

Sylvia Lafair, President of CEO Wins Top 25 Women in Northeastern Pennsylvania Award

Sylvia Lafair, PhD, President of CEO and award winning author has recently been recognized by her community as one of the Top 25 Women in Business.  The award is presented annually by the Northeastern Pennsylvania Business Journal and NEPA National Association of Business Women.

Dr. Lafair shares the award with an elite group of business leaders and entrepreneurs from around the community and their achievements will be celebrated at a luncheon on June 17th.

The best part of Dr. Lafair’s day is the people she gets to spend it with. Although she spends a great deal of time with words-articles, blogs, and books that she writes-it’s really about engaging people. As Dr. Lafair states, “The best part of my day is talking to people, relating to others and exploring better ways to handle problems that come up at work and at home.”

Dr. Lafair’s advice for aspiring leaders is to look with a critical eye to relationships they saw around them, mother, father, other relatives, coaches, or teachers  and how these important people in their lives behaved in situations; if they stood up or backed down in times of stress or conflict. We repeat these situations without ever realizing it. The way we react and respond to everyday situations is deeply ingrained in us from family, culture, and crisis.  In looking forward, today’s aspiring leaders need to observe if they are repeating patterns or charting their own course.  Men and women of all ages need to explore working in partnership with each other-it’s no longer about your gender, the color of your skin, or the language you speak, it’s about how we can meet, understand, and accept all of our differences.

Lafair’s philosophy has long been that life is a daring adventure-or it’s nothing. She believes taking the road less traveled means fewer traffic jams!

Her award winning book “Don’t Bring It to Work” (Jossey Bass) has been ranked in the top of Amazon’s Best Selling Workplace books. She is the author of the e-book, “Pattern Aware Success Guide” and has an upcoming e-book on women in leadership, “GUTSY Women”. She was a contributing author for the acclaimed book, “Working Together” and  she is often quoted as a workplace relationship expert in newspapers and magazines across the country, including the Wall Street Journal, Forbes.com, USA Today, Time, New York Times, as well as being on radio, webinars, television, and presenting at national conferences. She has two business blogs and contributes to many national leadership blogs.
